Quika is a new satellite Internet company with the aim of providing free and paid internet services to developing nations.
What Is Quika's Mission?
We aim to “connect the unconnected”. For too long many millions of people have been left behind due to a lack of infrastructure or costly ISPs. We aim to change that and bring about real change to entire communities.
How is Quika Funded?
Quika Free is entirely free to the subscriber. It is partially funded through the subsidisation of the paid version of Quika. Quika Free will also use advertising on its services too.
What Are the Differences Between the Free and Paid Services?
Quika free will have a fixed bandwidth.
Quika Start and Quika Plus will be available on a pay monthly basis or pre-paid plans. These will include a variety of bandwidths designed for SMEs and local ISPs.
What Download and Upload Speeds Can I Expect?
Quika Free will have a download of 3Mbps and an upload of 1Mbps.
Quika paid services has a download of 5-50Mbps and an upload of 1-3Mbps depending on the plan chosen.
How Much Will the Paid Version Cost?
This information will be released soon.
What Hardware Do I Need?
To use Quika, you will need a satellite dish and a satellite modem. These will be provided by our distributors in countries we serve.
The cost of the hardware will be released shortly.
What Can I Do with Quika?
Quika aims to bring communication to many people where the internet was too costly or not available.
With Quika, you can send and receive emails, catch up on the local and global news, connect with friends and family on social media, shop and sell online and even watch IP TV and other streaming services, such as YouTube (if available in your region).
The Quika service will be accessed on a per subscriber basis and will be available through a WiFi connection or fixed connection.
Quika has High Latency. What is that?
Latency is the time it takes to send data to the satellite and back down to Earth. The satellite Quika uses is GEO stationary, meaning the data has to travel 72,000 miles before it reaches its destination. Satellite internet has an average latency of 638ms.
This means that while data speeds will be fast, the response time will not appear instantly. Certain applications that require real-time reaction will not be suitable for Quika – such as FPS online games or screen sharing.
In the future, Quika aims to utilise LEO satellites (low-Earth orbit) that will reduce the latency to under 100ms.
Where Will Quika Be Released?
Quika will initially launch in Iraq and Afghanistan before launching in Africa. The full launch list includes:
Phase 1 (End of summer 2018)
Phase 2 (End of 2018)
Democratic Republic of Congo
Republic of Congo
Phase 3 (2019 and onwards)
We aim to increase coverage in countries in phase one and two. Alongside that, we aim to expand into other Middle Eastern and African countries and also countries in Asia, Oceania and South America.
This list is to give an idea to which countries Quika will serve but launching in some countries could be delayed or removed due to technological or commercial reasons or failure to receive local licensing.
Will Entire Countries be Covered by Quika?
Quika uses Ka-band satellite which has a footprint of 400 kilometres. This means that while large parts of certain countries will be covered, there will be areas the satellite won’t reach.
We will be providing maps of specific coverage in the future, so you can check to see whether you are covered.
When will Quika launch?
Quika aims to launch in Afghanistan and Iraq by the summer of 2018. The service will launch for African countries by the end of 2018.
Will Quika cover other areas not listed?
Quika’s vision is to become the global broadband free service provider using all connectivity means available without boundaries.
However, for phase one or two of our launch, we will only cover these countries before going global. You can let us know which countries you wish for us to cover in the future by using our website.
